Every year, large companies create small innovations to their technological products, enticing consumers to stay up to date with the latest tech. Whether it is a cell phone, computer, tv, etc., some consumers purchase these goods as a show of status, not out of necessity. This careless consumption of new technology leads to older technology being phased out. However, even though the physical technology is phased out of usage, the materials and waste from the products through manufacturing and consumption, is left behind. I believe that new technological advancements are beneficial for society, but the purchase and manufacturing of new devices annually is unnecessary. If you own a device that is in good working order, why do you need to replace it with the latest and greatest thing? I envision a future where electronics are updated and released every few years, where there is more changes and advancements creating an important role for the new device. I support repair companies that reject the "throw away" society that we live in, meaning that if something can be fixed, it should be fixed. The society that we live in today revolves around purchasing a new product and throwing away the "outdated" product, even if it can be fixed. This mindset needs to change.

Does having a phone with "the latest" feature necessarily equate with "being the greatest"? The rate at which people upgrade their phones seems to indicate that "the latest is the greatest" is the newest vanity fair to build up our self-identity, pride, and sense of personal worth. That is basically materialism as a form of ego and social image enhancement.
The reality? Good relationships (even if it's only one or two) and good health are the greatest wealth! These things require that we also unplug and disconnect from digital electronics in order to develop quality relationships and quality of life in terms of health and happiness. Enhancing communication skills is always a worthy endeavour, because it enhances our relationships.
So there you have it! Materialism is not the way to win true friends and influence people. Nurturing your heart and mind is the best place to start growing the garden of your life - in terms of one's relationships and healthy lifestyle and happiness.
I agree that this mindset needs to change. A lot of this comes down to manufacturers being more careful and cautious about how they release products, so as to not promote fast fashion and to ensure that their products are in good working order so they won't need to be replaced frequently.
