Hive mind, I need advice on biochar. I'm working on a restoration project. We used a biochar kiln to create biochar out of the invasive tree, Russian Olive. The resulting biochar has the pH of baking soda, which won't support native vegetation like cottonwoods and willows. The restoration site in southern Idaho already has somewhat alkaline soil. Are there rules of thumb when working with biochar and amendments that could buffer it? I've heard suggestions about adding cow manure, but I'm left wondering how much? What ratio of manure to biochar would make this biochar less basic and more suitable to supporting native species?
