I envision a world that is free of single use plastic products such as plastic bags.
With the example of our oceans and how they are filled with single use plastic products. These plastics are having biotic and abiotic impacts on the marine ecosystems. With a ban of single use plastics the production of these kinds of plastics should be halted and remove the source of the continuous pollution of the oceans via plastic.
We can push our government bodies to draft bills and legislations to end the production and sale of single use plastics. For the time being a continuous education of the next generation and current generations.
Hey Matthew,
I think that is a great vision, especially in refrence to the impacts on marine ecosystems. I am curious on the impacts of Vancouvers single use plastic production since the banning of them recently in retail stores? There seems to be a recent push, hopefully we can continue the change.
Hi Matthew, the effects of single-use plastics on aquatic ecosystems are certainly catastrophic. For policies that attempt to halt the production of single use plastics, how could they ensure that the economy maintains the status quo given that the manufacturing of a myriad of products are heavily dependent on single use plastics for components or packaging?
I wish for a 99.9% global ban on plastics. Am I only dreaming?
Am I only dreaming? Can it be real? Very likely, because we just need to learn from what people did before the invention of plastics, right?
OK, so we must ask industrial designers, "How much plastic is actually considered absolutely necessary and indispensible for functional designs?"
Plastic was discovered and invented in roughly the turn of the century. So how did we manage from 100 BC to 1900 AD? We might learn a thing or two or even much much more!
I think the more we explore this as a real possibility to consider, the more solutions we will find.
