Growing up, "reduce, reuse, recycle" seemed to be the key to sustainability. I was led to believe that if everyone limited their own consumption, the climate change crisis would halt.
I envision a future where awareness prevails, recognizing that the crises largely stem from policies and politics, something beyond our own self-control. Real change requires pressure to be placed on these large companies that we cannot mitigate the effects of. My values around this center around the manipulation of policies that put blame onto us as consumers. For example, with the 25-cent fee for cups, the money collected often went straight into the company's profits with no improvements in their sustainability choices.
My first step is to learn more, I still have a lot of questions about the root of the crisis.

Hi Michelle I think you brought light to some great everyday examples in this post! The example you mentioned, like the 25-cent fee for cups, sheds light on the importance of scrutinizing the effectiveness and intentions behind certain initiatives!! It's essential to question whether these efforts genuinely contribute to sustainability or merely serve as profit-driven strategies.
Well said--it's not just on us to change our behavior, but to hold corperations accountable as well!
Dear Michelle,
Perhaps part of the problem is the archaic "profit at all costs motive"? Profit can be measured in terms of other economic and intrinsic values than money, however.....money is merely a medium of exchange to replace the sometimes inconvenient and cumbersome barter system (tho' there are times when barter and trade can be an effective economic transaction); what we value is most often reflected in how we spend money, but what would the world look like if there was a UBI (Universal Basic Income) based on a "basket of basics for human rights like essential health and wellness needs with reasonable provisions and accommodations for proper and beneficial care for ourselves and our fellow creatures and lovely planet?
