In a world where people are seeking environmental justice, I believe it is hard to draw the line on how, where, when, and who can intervene to make these changes. I envision a world where everyone in every community has a say in the procedural aspect of bringing justice to the environment. Although it may not benefit all groups, I believe it is important that everyone’s opinion is included and reflected in the decision making process. When discussing justice for the environment, it is not easy to meet everyone’s needs, which is more of a reason why we cannot just find the easy way by ignoring certain opinions, but to put in the hard work and effort in order to find measures where people of all groups can be content. We cannot bring injustice to minorities just to bring justice to the environment. I want to start a movement by collecting the opinions of these minorities to create a large community of opinions by starting a hashtag on social media where everyone can gain confidence to share their opinions freely and openly.
@cosphereproject
Happy to join the movement.
Hi Eunee, I concur, it is vital that decision making processes take into account multiple perspectives in order to have informed decision making occurring on all different fronts. How do you propose to increase representation to ensure such appropriate evaluation occurs from a political or legal standpoint such that we can hold ourselves accountable or liable when this due process is overlooked?
Thank you for your sharing. I totally agree that everyone’s opinion is required to bring justice to the environment.
Hey Eunee, I love that you brought up a dimension of injustice in your post. I also talked about similar things, and I agree that it's so important to have a representative voice for everyone in the decision-making process. Great job!
Thank you for sharing these points! When you say that "everyone's opinion is included and reflected in the decision-making process" do you think all of these opinions should hold equal weight, or should some be valued more than other? (Ex. prioritizing Indigenous voices over settler voices since Indigenous people have had a much longer relationship with the land, and have not had their opinion and knowledge respected by settlers over the last few centuries).
Hi Eunee! I agree with your point that even though we cannot satisfy everyone's needs, we still need to take the time to include their opinions into our decisions. I really like your idea of gathering everyone's opinions and putting them into a safe, online community as social media can have such a big impact in our generation.
I like how you highlight that what may seem fair for the environment may not be fair for the people who depend on it. The Western scientific perspective of what interventions we should take to solve environmental problems can be very damaging some communities.
Hi Eunee, thank you for sharing! I agree with your points, everyone in Canada should have the right and freedom to voice their opinions. I think its often seen that Canada is so diverse, and yes it is, but what we are lacking is unionity and connectedness. We are so isolated from each other, it’s often difficult to listen to others’ opinion and explanation behind certain things. I think by having annual meetings based on each community, members can come together to listen to others and advocate for what they think is right.
Great post! I agree with your points and I like your idea of starting a movement using social media.
Great discussion it is hard to please everyone AND the environment too
Thank you for sharing and thank you for pointing out that it is difficult to ensure everyone's needs are being met.
I like your idea of starting a hashtag - social media has the potential to have profound impacts and it is a great place to start!
You're totally right, inclusivity in these discussions is very hard to achieve but equally as important. Especially when opinions differ quite substantially, it is not an easy task to keep everyone happy and heard.
