It's hard to believe that 3 months has passed already! ENVR 430 has been so much fun and I really enjoyed the discussions we've had in class, as well as the topics we covered :) I really didn't know what to expect as I had never taken an ENVR course before but I was delighted to have found such supportive peers and teaching staff to guide me along the way. We spoke about many topics that I had only known about briefly and we expanded it on it by talking about it's implications and interventions. From ENVR 430, I feel that I'm taking with me the ability to have meaningful hard conversations with those around me. It's clear that there is still so much knowledge about our climate crisis that the general public doesn't know about and we can all begin to do our parts by spreading awareness. Therefore, for this last week:
- my vision for the future is one where we're more informed before making decisions regarding our climate crisis
- my values are equality and equity between us, our neighbours and nature
- an intervention could be the normalization of hard conversations!
ENVR 430 is definitely one of my most memorable classes and although this class has come to an end, I'm excited to see how we continue to grow from this! Thank you so much for an amazing 3 months :)
Hi Destinie! I also can't believe how fast this class went by! I hadn't thought about how much we learnt through the process of our hard conversations, but you're right! That was such a new experience for me personally and although it ended up being a difficult conversation (as the name suggests lol), I learnt a lot about how I can approach this type of interaction and I'm really glad that this class gave us the opportunity to practice this type of skill when other classes haven't! It's important because we need to be able to communicate why these problems, that we learn about in school, should be important to people in our lives and our communities who aren't learning about these things everyday like we are!
Love the image haha. I'm glad that you were able to take away such a valuable practice, communication is so important :)
Great post! I like your values!
Hey Destinie, I totally agree, this course has given me the confidence to speak more openly about hard topics.
Great post! I like your vision, values and action! hard conversations should be more normalized
Hi Destinie Yang, I loved your intervention of normalizing hard conversations! It can be difficult, but with small steps and practice it can become easier overtime as it did for me during this class!
Yessssss - let's normalize hard conversations! Difficulty should not permit disregard.
I personally love having my ideas challenged by difficult conversations because it almost always means growth is happening :)
Yes! Taking this course definitely help me know more about the topics and information that I was not familiar with. It brought me to another level of thinking environmental issues and offered me a wonderful platform to talk about environmental issues and share my ideas with my peers. I enjoyed this experience a lot!
I agree, the hard conversations training was very helpful and I've applied it to so many conversations already!
yes! equality and equity between us and nature is important
Hey Destinie, I think this is my favorite course ever at UBC! I was equally surprised about how this ENVR course was, as it definitely exceeded my expectations :)
Hi Destine!
I share the same vision and values as you! I definitely normalizing hard conversations is the next big step!
Thanks for you reflection! I agree that one of the most meaningful takeaways from this class is learning how to have hard conversations with people. It may be hard at first but once you start, it is one of the most interesting and meaningful conversations you will have.
Thanks for sharing your takeaways! It's so great that you feel more prepared to have hard conversations - honest and respectful communication like this can be so difficult but so impactful and I think can strengthen relations.
I completely agree, Destinie! Even after reading the syllabus, I still didn't really know what I was getting into with this course in the beginning. In the end, I also felt like my knowledge of topics was greatly expanded and the hard conversations where really important and we should keep having them. Thank you for sharing!
Great post! I agree with your visions, I think that informing others regarding climate crisis is an important step that we all need to take. I like your interventions of normalizing hard conversation, because it puts us in a vulnerable position to create change in the future.
Great reflection! I also hope that after taking this class, many of us raise awareness to those around us and that we continue to make informed-decisions!
Thank you for sharing your values! I also hope to normalize having hard conversations with the people in my life.
