Great post Jinny! To add to your thought, I can advocate that I think it would be a great idea to rely on indigenous techniques and management for forest cultivation. This is due to the fact that when the government is in had for forest production they over harvest because of economic need and instability. Whereas indigenous communities can also incorporate economic needs but understands the restoration and management of the forest.

Hey Declan, I thought this post was really interesting. I definitely support Your idea of re-wilding urban landscapes, however for someone who works in the horticulture and landscape architect business I believe in alternative ways to promote urban re-wilding without having messy lawns lol (cause tbh seeing a messy lawn really bugs me). With that being said these alternative ways include replacing regular Kentucky blue grass lawns with local moss lawns or clover. Another way to promote this re-wilding is to introduce wild seed mixes into portions of this moss lawn. This in turn helps to keep a manicured look by also enhance the idea of re-wilding!

Hi Kevin, I totally agree with mandatory organ donating and how some people aren’t able to experience life to its fullest due to their restrictive conditions. However, the one thing is to make it a mandatory law would be very difficult to pass because the ethics behind it. For example some religions and cultures use organs for their rituals and so on. I’m curious to know how you would deal with this?

Hi Sharon, I really liked your alternative idea for cremation, I actually found the concept quite interesting and easily applicable because liquid nitrogen is so cheap. One question i have for you is how does the breakdown of body cells persist once you are frozen? Do you just disintegrate into a fine powder at a certain temp or does the frozen corpse have to be manipulated and broken down via a secondary process?

Hey Sarah, this post was awesome. I love the idea of humans being able to coexist with populations of animals in their cities. This is something I have admired since I was a kid. I remember going to Hawaii and trying to catch the wild chickens that occupy most of the Hawaiian island lol. On a more serious note, this idea of coexisting with animals is very applicable in municipalities such as North Vancouver, where bears tend to roam neighbourhoods looking for food. I wonder if there are any ideas out there that provide framework for safely coexisting with these populations?

I definitely agree with you that holding companies accountable for their own disposal of plastic is definitely a step in the right direction. With that being said I second with your opinion that there needs to be some sort of 3rd party auditing service that can monitor these large companies in regards to where this plastic waste is going and/or being reused. Furthermore, I wonder as to how exactly these 3rd parties may stop companies from operating proper disposal and reuse techniques as a cover up for burning and shipping of plastic they don't want to use.

Hello Kevin, I too have recently noticed when ordering clothes online that they usually come in shitty disposable plastic bags. I have tried re-using the larger ziplock bags that some clothes come in and even those tend to not hold reuse-ability. I definitely agree with you that these single use plastics are just not necessary and should be banned, but i think another clever way for companies to still package there clothes and not get damaged is to charge consumers an extra low cost fee that incorporates a reusable plastic bag that keeps the clothes from getting dirty and damaged, but can also benefit the consumer by acting as a plastic tote or grocery bag to carry things in.

Hey Zhaochen, this idea is super thoughtful and needs more recognition. I definitely and environmental credit system is a way to limit large corps from exploiting non eco friendly acts. I think this method could work really well if there was some sort of risk reward mechanism put in place. Specifically, if companies meet the quota or stay below the quota they are rewarded for their action. Then if they go beyond the said quota they are fined substantially.

Hello Christopher, I 100% agree with you that there is no need for single use plastics. It baffles me that as a general population we know how terrible these are for the environment but companies keep on using them and production lines keep on producing them. Thank you so much for sharing Vytal. I think it is such a great idea to implement this type of framework into fast food delivery service. Do you know of any ideas like this that are taking place in Canada? I know that on a small scale some businesses such as earnest ice cream have a reusable pint policy, but i am curious as too if any local delivery apps are in the midst of partnering with companies like this.

Hello Shanzeh, I really enjoyed reading this post. Like you I also found the the topic of BPA in receipts quite interesting. I love how you mention that Costco should adapt techniques similar to the Amazon grocery store in Seattle. When I read about what they were doing there I immediately though to myself how clever of an idea that is and how fun it would make grocery shopping. Additionally, if Costco and even other stores adapted these techniques you would never have to wait in the dreadful lineups that take longer than the grocery shopping itself.

Yesss!!!!! I love your suggestion about monitoring companies based on environmental performance. This insight is something I have never really thought about, but definitely simplifies route to consequences. I think if there was some way to publicly quantify how much non profit environmental action by a company is being evidently pursued through the use of auditors, etc, then this would be a great way to minimize companies from hiding there under the table DAF's

Hey Maria, this is such a good post!!! It is clear, concise and addresses a major problem, regarding the power that billionaires have. I completely agree with your vision and I think that transparency is absolutely crucial. It is really sad to think that when we see these ultra rich people making huge donations to a good cause it's most likely being done so they can get a tax break. I believe there needs to be an agreement that complete transparency of the donation and transaction is open to the public, otherwise the donation cannot go through.

I thought your values are super empathetic and I am glad you highlighted that most billionaires put a lot of time, effort and knowledge to make that amount of money and sometimes people fail to realize this. Hey Helen, I 100% agree with you. I believe the most ethical and reliable way of dealing with the ultra rich wage gap is by taxing heavily and monitoring large sum donations. Do you think if these implementations were made would be see future implications to the world economy, etc?

I totally agree with how the public only cares about these situations when it impacts their daily lives individually. For example, right now in Vancouver we finally have gotten a downpour of rain and I already hear students complaining about how it’s affecting their days negatively. It’s only been three days! We need to be more appreciative of what we are fortunate to have or else we will take so much advantage we end up with nothing. I agree that prescribed fires are the way to go, and including to the conversation, it should be done by right hands, by Indigenous communities. They are the ONLY ones who understand historically and culturally the roots and lands of the forest. They are the professionals and they are the ones who can sufficiently take care of THEIR land.

It’s interesting and honestly saddening as how the general public is only becoming aware and seeing the drastic effects of climate change now. For example, as the photo you have shared with us is a very educative photo, however, this only grabs people’s attention because ‘it is destroying their precious view.’ This accumulation of wildfires and other climate change effects have been accumulating for decades. This isn’t a new upcoming crisis. These events are becoming worse and worse and more prevalent because GHGs have been piling up from human impacts. Therefore, I also hope that it is not too late and that the whole world catches on and makes a change. Especially as we have such amazing technology and evolutionary advances that make it possible.

I’m really interested in your intervention suggestion, in regards to fire resistant plants. How do you envision the introduction of fire resistant plants to an urban landscape setting contributing to better air quality, when most of this bad air quality stems from forest fires?
