I really like your post, Destinie! I echo your sentiments as I, too, am a Biology major. The ultimate failure of action in the 2009 Fraser River sockeye salmon crisis is shocking and disappointing. Your point about the consideration of complex adaptive systems (CAS), or lack thereof, is key in large, intricate climate issues, like the said crisis. How do you envision the support of CAS via governments, organizations, and/or corporations moving forward?

Thank you for this wonderful post, Allison. I love the idea of introducing grants for sustainable agriculture! Said innovation would facilitate access to capital for creating diverse, perennial polycultures. Improving access to capital for 'rewilded' agriculture is critical since Kai mentioned in class and The Biggest Little Farm demonstrated that such agriculture requires substantial initial investment and follows a different pattern of annual crop returns.

This is such a helpful comment. I sometimes catch myself forgetting that recycling/transformations are not 100% efficient.

I love your idea on introducing incentives for restaurants to produce less waste.

Hi Robert! Thank you for bringing up the topic of food waste; it is absolutely important, but we were not able to cover it in the finite time for Week 6 material. I like the individual action items you have mentioned. What are your thoughts on how we can tackle the issue of food waste to elicit system-level change?

Thanks for this post, Arshi! I love your idea of using non-toxic pesticides in conjunction with natural predators. If said innovation were possible, there would need to be proper legislation surrounding its implementation to prevent the abuse of non-toxic pesticides. Non-toxic pesticides are still chemical pesticides. Therefore, using only non-toxic pesticides would have a greater chance, by multiple orders of magnitude, of developing resistance.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Bolun. I very much echo your sentiments. Technological developments can be incredible and innovative, but not necessarily; sometimes practices change in detrimental manners (like many modern agricultural practices).

I totally agree that the juxtaposition between fantasy and reality can feel daunting. Interventions like the sustainable agriculture committee can help mobilize our fantasies/visions into a realistic model that farmers can adopt.
