Hey Philip, great picture to supplement this post! Unfortunately, much of the mountain pine beetle-killed stands have already been logged here in BC. But also beware of the sale of byproducts like this, to make sure that it doesn't start up an industry that becomes dependent on them, which then further fuels logging (not of byproducts). That's EXACTLY what seems to have happened with the Drax power controversy, and due to the sale of MPB-killed trees! Great, Irina! It would help even more if those subsidies to use regenerative farming practices were redirected from existing subsidy programs that incentivize unsustainable practices.

I love the idea of selling a change in water pricing as making basic needs free! Re: big infrastructure, there are also modular / distributed technologies that could solve problems for marginalized communities at much smaller scales, perhaps more cheaply.

Also, how to make these councils actually happen? I'm not sure that we'll ever eradicate racism and discrimination, but it doesn't hurt to aspire to that.

Hi Lisa, I totally agree that we need new ways to make decisions! I'd love to hear more about your idea, though. E.g., would these councils be a new level of government? Would they be entrenched in the provincial system (which largely controls what happens on the land)? There actually used to be something like this in BC: they were called LRMPs (Land Resource Management Plans, but the plans came with a decision-making body which was effectively like your councils). Or entirely separate? If separate, how would their jurisdiction—their authorities and responsibilities overlap with existing jurisdictions?

Folks, especially from Alberta and Saskatchewan, do actively promote that idea of Canada's energy being the "cleanest", but it is really not clear what they could mean by that. The oilsands are actually one of the most GHG-intensive and polluting sources of oil we have, because the bitumen is so thoroughly mixed in with sand and other materials. Accordingly, it often needs to be extracted with steam, and always with solvents, such that massive tailing ponds have toxic residues. This is not the case with other oil extraction. So oilsands oil (the majority of Canadian oil) is both less efficient (so worse for the climate) as well as being more destructive for habitat, and more polluting than most sources of oil.

So great to see this, Chris! Yes, there are real injustices at play in climate negotiations, and I love the idea that carbon taxes could help address these inequalities and injustices.

Great! Recognitional justice might mean considering all decisions affecting First Nations peoples in terms of Seventh Generation principles. That would be a huge change!

This sounds something like what folks are calling for in "Regional Environmental Assessment". The Liberal government contemplated this when revising them Impact Assessment legislation, but decided in favour of the current model, which is much more technocratic. We'll discuss more in the Minerals week!
