Hey Amy! I agree! I think humans need to better evaluate our relationship with planning in cities to incorporate nature with human existence, or we need to create better conservation efforts.

I think immortalization post-death is not necessarily a western ideal. Great monuments and tombs commemorating important figures are now archaeological sites worldwide. I guess the difference in the west is class status and access to immortalizing death care are prevalent. It is a lot easier to build yourself a tomb now then it was 10 000 years later. Immortalizing deathcare I feel is also associated with wealth, or self-preservation for religious purposes.

I think autonomy is such an important part of the discussion about death. We need to provide better health care to people before we open the door to MAiD in my opinion.

Hey Philip! Thank you for taking the time to write a thoughtful response. When I mean more encompassing, I believe our healthcare should cover mental health care and disability care more equitably. That means mental healthcare should be free, and people should have free access to mobility aids and any care staff they require. I also think palliative care should be expanded and have better living facilities for people in assisted living homes and nursing homes. I am not that knowledgeable about healthcare budgets, but I do know that recently the provinces have been begging Justin Trudeau for more money for healthcare to no avail. I have had many experiences with deathcare I did not write about in my post. In high school, I volunteered at a palliative care facility where I witnessed people suffering at the hands of the facility's environment. The general philosophy of locking up old people to wait and die is prevalent in elder care, and I think that should end. The end of someone's life does not need to be like this, and I think this system creates a lot of anxiety in elder people. The only real way to opt out is to buy into better care, which is extremely pricey. We need better federal funding for healthcare to thwart this.

I agree that plastics should be tracked to the manufacturer! We have the ability to create infrastructure to support a program like this, so I believe this could actually be done in the near future

Hi Hunter! I think that the banning of single use plastic also has to be accompanied by some pushes in equity in general. One example of this is the plastic cups ban in Vancouver and how it as affected the homeless population here. Before the ban you could get water for free at any fast food restaurant. Now, homeless people who cannot afford the cup charge lose access to clean drinking water.

Hey Philip, I think the current standards for a lot of federal restrictions really need to be reconsidered. I think resource extraction is something that has corrupted our government so extremely. We have to reconsider our entire legislative infrastructure to change our priorities away from extraction and towards sustainability.

Hey Kevin! I have some insider knowledge about your clothing being shipped in plastic bags! This is done to prevent you clothing from becoming moldy during transport. I am sure you would not want your nike running shorts being sent to you stinky and covered in mold. The best way to prevent this is honestly purchasing things in store! Many parts of supply chains require special sanitary protocols because without them no one would want to buy the product in the first place.

Hey Christopher! I think your idea is great, but I think we should be a little bit more mindful when it comes to supporting startups! I think the government being in charge of standardized food containers that are reusable would actually be better and more beneficial to commercial enterprises.

The main reason why the legion has such a tight hold on the poppy copyright is because the goal of selling poppies is for a charitable cause (they make a lot of money, 14 mil a year). They don't want to be undercut by a competitor like the dollar store. The case of the sealskin poppies comes down to the creator profiting off of poppy imagery; there were other cases where fur was used instead of sealskin and was also more widely celebrated as the profits went back to the legion. Let's also be real here, I have been to many, many remembrance day events in my life, and patriotism to the commonwealth is always a central theme of the day. A day where we commemorate the death of people facilitated by the government sending them to war also must be paired with the appropriate amount of patriotism, or else the military-industrial complex would crumble in on itself. This starts early, too; we all remember having solemn remembrance day assemblies in elementary school.

Hey Declan, I would be interested in your thoughts on plastic and one-use systems for health systems. I think we have built some serious critical infrastructure on the use of plastic we will seriously have to reckon with in the future. Outside of consumption, plastic is a vital part of our lives as humans, and it's very hard to quantify the industrial change required for us to wean ourselves off. The petroleum engineers of the past may have been deviously overzealous.
